Here's an interesting post from the blog of writer Robert Jackson Bennett that takes the exact opposite view of Amanda Palmer (in my previous post) when it comes to being "friends" with your audience. I have to admit, he makes some interesting points.
I am a Maine cartoonist whose work appears on merchandise across the US, in Atlantic Canada and the Caribbean. Mostly known by New Englanders for my lobster and moose characters, my cartoons have also appeared in newspapers and magazines such as Down East. Clients range from L.L. Bean to Cedars-Sinai. Orphaned as a young boy, I was raised by a band of roving woodchucks. To this day, my idea of a good time is hanging out on a grassy knoll next to the highway.

A NEW PARADIGM FOR ARTISTS
Two summers ago, I attended Readercon in Burlington, Mass, a conference of writers and readers of speculative and fantastic fiction. Each year, the Shirley Jackson Awards are given out there, and in this instance the author Neil Gaiman showed up to collect two awards, accompanied by his wife, the musician/songwriter Amanda Palmer. After the ceremony, I ended up standing next to Ms. Palmer's seat. I quietly asked her if she minded me taking her picture. She didn't, and here's the photo:
Early last year, through the wonderfully talented artist Will Terry, I became aware of a book called LINCHPIN by Seth Godin. I purchased the audio version and listened to it on the way to and from my day job. It started a new way of thinking about art and creating for me.
Tonight I was browsing through Facebook and a friend had posted a TED talk by---Amanda Palmer. Talking about ideas very similar to Seth Godin's.
These ideas excite me in a way I can't quite explain. But I know, someday and hopefully sooner than later, I'll be sharing my art in similar ways and earning a living from it.

OH, AYUH...
No explanation needed if you live in Maine.
Though I've chosen an artist's life, it's not exactly a cash cow. Don't feel you need to donate, but the button below is for any contribution you find fit for the enjoyment this cartoon brought you. Thanks so much!
